Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup sourdough starter Make sure it's active and bubbly.
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar Adjust based on desired sweetness.
Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute with part whole wheat flour.
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder For richer flavor, consider using dark cocoa powder.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (optional) Can use milk, dark, or white chocolate.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine sourdough starter, warm water, melted butter, and sugar. Mix well.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
  3. If using, fold in chocolate chips.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
Rising
  1. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 2-4 hours until doubled in size.
  2. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased bread pan.
  3. Let it rise for another 30-60 minutes.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  3. Allow to cool before slicing.

Notes

Store the double chocolate sourdough bread in a sealed plastic bag or an airtight container at room temperature for a few days. Freeze for longer storage wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil.
